Decontamination:

Bellerive, Lausanne, Switzerland:

Wastes and pollutants of different origins were detected on a site to be developed for a major underlacustrine gas pipeline landing. Specific screening, sorting, testing and treatment procedures were developed in order to handle the excavated material in accordance with local regulations. Basins for water treatment were designed, and a site-specific risk assessment was conducted.

Asbestos Mine Residues Dump, Balangero, Italy:

A multidisciplinary team participated to the design of an award winning solution for the environmental and geotechnical rehabilitation of a large dry tailings dump. The solution represented in the eyes of the jury the “best proposed solution” because of the sensible treatment of the multiple risks within a pre-determined overall cost objective.

Dust and erosion generate health and environmental risks.

Health risk considerably reduced thanks to alternative transport technique. The tramway produces eco-friendly electricity.

Cambodia, Lao PDR, Sudan:

Studies were performed to develop models geared towards the evaluation of land mines and unexploded ordnance contamination risks at national level. Ground breaking applications and concepts were presented and tested in the field leading to a better allocation of decontamination assets in a country.

The history of wars and conflicts can sometimes be modeled thru unexploded ordnance (UXO), remnants of war (ROW) and anti personnel (AP) or anti tank (AT) surficial archeology.

Ferrous wastes will be turned into iron rebars for construction industry.

Coal Mines in Santa Caterina, Brasil:

A group of Brazilian scientists was lead through the first phases of a risk assessment on a region encompassing 29 properties (20 abandoned, 9 operational). Severe ARD and health hazards are major concerns in this region.
