Extraction, Transportation and Storage:

Red Dog, Alaska:

Provided a comprehensive study on risks and environmental and industrial accidents (with links to ISO14000), using databases, geographic information systems and internet based solutions for an operation located in a remote area in northern Alaska, including intermediate storage sub-operation located at more than 100km from the main living/operational hub.

Full scale simulation of airliner crash at the airport.

Antamina Mine, Peru:

Performed, in cooperation with a Vancouver based consulting firm, a complete risk assessment of the tailings systems for this mine before it was commissioned. The complex is located in the Peruvian Andes, in an area subject to karst. The risk assessment encompassed pipelines, several dams and a tunnel system. Then proceeded with cyclic reassessments. In Jan 2005 went again to Antamina to perform a natural and man-made slopes risk assessment. In 2006 the slopes risk assessment was updated and participated in a 120km long road risk assessment.

Runoff, drainage and surficial water control to reduce and mitigate environmental impact.

Placer Dome Canada Ltd.,Canada/US, Homestake Mines, US, Cominco Inc, Canada, Peru, US, Chile, Australia

Conducted, in cooperation with a Vancouver based consulting firm, large scale quantitative risk assessments for tailings systems, including over 40 dams, smelters and the logistic of mining operations. A specific probabilistic methodology was developed to evaluate the risk in several mines and to allow comparisons, prioritization, and classification of system components related to their risk level. The methodology involved subjective probabilities, workshop management, historic data analysis, sophisticated event trees and reliability models using series and parallel systems. The result of the study was a manual that allows mine managers to update the risk assessment whenever necessary. Lately, because of the operations' development and their need to comply with ISO 14000 standards the methodology was expanded to include procedures to document and maintain accidents/incidents records, as well as mitigative actions.

Artic operations are exposed to specific risks and very vulnerable logistics.

Risk Assessment for Energy, Water and Transportation for Chuquicamata Mine, Codelco, Chile:

Within the framework of this study all the supply systems of the mine were studied, including water, energy, acid networks leading to a holistic approach and a prioritized list of quantitative risks.

Mining at high altitude brings an array of hazards and related risks.

Mining Development in North Western Canada (Confidential Client):

Supporting a major mining industry player in their decisions related to a 3BUS$ project in a remote location in N-W Canada. Proprietary methodologies are used through this critical mandate.

Climate change and ice cap melting will considerably alter artic ship traffic.
